STUDENT ATHLETE NIGEL CHATMAN DIED IN A CAR CRASH TODAY ON HIS WAY TO PRACTICE. ACCORDING TO POLICE THE 21 YEAR OLD WAS TRYING TO AVOID A CRASH ON 270 WHEN HE LOST CONTROL OF HIS CAR. MARK: NBC4’S ERIC HALPERIN IS LIVE AT OTTERBEIN TONIGHT. WITH HOW THIS COMMUNITY DEALING WITH THIS LOSS THEY’RE SUPPORTING EACH OTHER AS MUCH AS THEY CAN. CHATMANS IMPACT WAS FELT ON AND OFF THE FIELD HERE AT OTTERBEIN UNIVERSITY. WHEN YOU ASK PEOPLE ABOUT HIM, YOU’LL HEAR OVER AND OVER AGAIN THAT HE HE HAD A LARGER THAN LIFE PERSONALITY..A PERSONALITY AND LIFE THAT WILL CERTAINLY BE MISSED. NEXT TIME THE OTTERBEIN FOOTBALL TEAM TAKES THE FIELD, IT’LL BE MISSING SOMEONE WHO WASN’T JUST A BIG PLAYER BUT A BIG PERSONALITY. SOMEONE THEY CALLED BIG NIGE. ADAM PRESCOTT, SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTOR, OTTERBEIN: “YOU DON’T ALWAYS REMEMBER WHAT SOMEBODY SAID OR WHAT SOMEBODY DID BUT YOU ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW THEY MADE YOU FEEL. AND I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS GONNA REMEMBER HOW NIGEL MADE THEM FEEL” SOPHOMORE DEFENSIVE LINEMAN NIGEL CHATMAN IS BEING REMEMBERED AS SOMEONE WHO COULD INSTANTLY MAKE YOU SMILE. AS SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTOR, ADAM PRESCOTT GOT TO KNOW HIM WELL. ADAM PRESCOTT, SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTOR, OTTERBEIN: “THE WAY HE LIT UP A ROOM AND COULD QUICKLY TURN SOMEONE’S DAY AROUND” THE 21-YEAR-OLD WAS A STANDOUT ON THE FIELD AND AROUND CAMPUS. HE WAS A COMMUNICATIONS MAJOR AND WAS ON THE DEBATE TEAM. WHEN NOT PLAYING FOOTBALL HE WAS OFTEN LEADING THE STUDENT SECTION OF FANS CHEERING ON OTHER OTTERBEIN TEAMS. THIS PICTURE OF HIM ON THE FIELD GIVES JUST A GLIMPSE AT THE FUN PERSON HE WAS. DAWN STEWART, INTERIM VP FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS & ATHLETIC DIRECTOR: “NIGEL HAD THAT LARGER THAN LIFE PERSONALITY. HE’D LIGHT UP A ROOM WITH A SMILE AND THAT’S WHAT WE ALL THINK ABOUT WHEN WE THINK OF HIM” CHATMAN WAS FROM REYNOLDSBURG. THERE WAS A MOMENT OF SILENCE FOR HIM AT FRIDAY’S GAME. AT OTTERBEIN THE TEAM GOT TOGETHER SO THEY COULD SUPPORT EACH OTHER DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME. DAWN STEWART, INTERIM VP FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS & ATHLETIC DIRECTOR: HE’S A MEMBER OF OUR FAMILY.
