News 8 Sports Round Up – May 13th, 2016


Welcome to sports everyone..the UW-La Crosse softball team losing to UW-Oshkosh this morning, Setting up an elimination game against Benedictine this afternoon. Winner takes on the Titans in the regional championship tomorrow. Eagles get on the board in the first. Ashley Lindstrom grounds one to the right side. Off the second basemen. Sydney Murphey scores. Few batters later. Sarah Mueller drops one into right field. Lindstrom comes on home. La Crosse has a 2-0 lead after one…. Eagles got a strong start out of Jessie Carignan this afternoon. She gets the strikeout here. Her only K of the game but she only allows one run in nearly 6 innings of work… Fifth inning. Grace Mindrup shoots one to left field. Brooke Baldwin going to try to score. She’ll get their safely…gives the Eagles the 4-1 lead. Benedictine with its best threat in the sixth. Selena Kweder gets a hit back up the middle. That scores one. Runner tries to get to thrid and she is gunned down by Kathryn VanderSchaaf. That ends the threat… UW-La Crosse survives and advances to the regional championship against UW-Oshkosh. They are winners 4-1… We’ve had some adverse situations in the season as well. We had a stretch in the middle of the season where we struggled a little bit. I think we are use to battling through some of those things. That experience helped us a lot. We have to play our game, a clean ball game. I know we can take them. We’ve had some great wins against them. Just need to keep playing hard and play clean ball. We need to pick better pitches to swing at and hit them hard and start off right away. Instead of waiting until we are down a couple runs. So the Eagles will need to beat UW-Oshkosh twice tomorrow to advance to the Super Regionals. Game 1 will start at noon at North Campus Field. And if necessary, game 2 is scheduled for pm. WIAC baseball tournament. NCAA tournament automatic qualifier on the line for UW-La Crosse and UW-Whitewater. Eagles loses to the Warhawks 8-3. UWL has a chance at an at-large bid. The NCAA Division III tournament field will be announced as early as tomorrow night. With 2 wins today, the Winona State softball team advancing to tomorrow’s NCAA Division II regional championship. The Warriors will need to beat host school Harding twice to move on to the Super Regionals. Game 1 is scheduled for noon. NSIC Track and Field conference meet wrapping up today in St. Paul, Minneapolis. Winona State women score 134, win their first conference title since 2005. To the prep ranks now, where the La Crosse Central boys and girls track and field teams hoping to extend their conference bragging rights for another year. MVC conference track and field meet today out at Roger Harring Stadium. Start in the Girls 4×200 meter relay. Close one between Sparta and Onalaska. It’s the Spartans who edge out the Hilltoppers by .21 seconds… Boys race. It’s the team from Central who takes this one at .51 Boys 400… Holmen’s Seth Holden making it look easy. He wins the 400 by two seconds… Girls 4X100 meter relay. The Aquinas Bluegolds gets it done with a time of 50.69 seconds… Boys side… It’s a close one but Central pulls away late to take this race….43.70. 300 meter hurldes…. For the girls it’s Melissa Wiebke of Onalaska who finishes strong to win…48.85 seconds For the Boys… It’s a pair of Logan Rangers at the top. Joe Bond and Dion Smith finish top two respectively…. 800 meter run… Mason Kalander of Holmen dominates from start to finish. She wins in .19 Boys race. It’s Jett Mickelson of Central finishing first in a time of …….44 200 meter dash…. Aquinas Freshman Lexi Donarski takes first in 25.74 seconds… And for the Boys. It that Holden guy from Holmen again. He sets a new meet record at 21.85 seconds… La Crosse Central girls win conference, scoring 162.50 points. On the boys side, it’s a Red Raiders sweep. Central repeats as conference champs. Coulee Conference Track and field meet at Black River Falls High School. For the girls, Viroqua takes the team title. G-E-T is the boys conference champs. High school softball, Luther and Onalaska playing a doubleheader. Hilltoppers take game 1… Hallie Schmeling gets things going in game 2. smacks it back up the middle Onalaska with the early 1-0 lead… Bottom half. Luther loads the bases. Jenna Wahl sends one down the line in left. That plates home two. Knights go up 2-1… Next batter. Keely Paus punches one through the right side. Two more come into score. Luther puts up four runs in the inning… Second inning. Hilltoppers try to answer back. But Anna Dobbe doesn’t let that happen. She picks up the K with the high heat. Score remains 4-1 Onalaska comes back to win 6-5…takes both games today against Luther. Coulee conference golf meet. Luther wins the team title with an overall score of 340. Individual champ is Arcadia’s Jordan Lisowski with a round of 71. Coulee golfer of the year is Joel Ellefson L-LEFF-SON of Viroqua/North Crawford. Racing season underway tonight at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Sportsmans race starts off with a bang. Some early contact and we got a spinout right out of the gates… Race resets. Tight at the top but not until Randy Hunfeldt gets the pass on turn one. He takes the lead with nine to go… And he would not look back. He pulls away from the field and he takes home the checkered flag…
